ABOUT THE PROJECT SPACE
The Misemono-Yatai is a mobile exhibition space for contemporary art, founded by Berlin artist Tatjana Preuss in Tokyo in 2012. The project space offers offers a platform for artistic self-organization, as well as collective and participatory forms of art creation — free from commercial considerations and the rules of traditional galleries. As the composite title misemono (curiosities) and yatai (booth) implies, the project space is a hybrid between the traditional vehicles of Japanese street vendors and European cabinets of curiosities or early scientific collections. As a mobile platform, the yatai can be exhibited indoors in partnership with local art institutions or outdoors in the public space, engaging communities who wouldn't normally come into contact with contemporary art. The aim of the project is to initiate conversations between people from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, to make the valuable work of art institutions more visible to the public, and of course to facilitate exchange between the Japanese and German art scene at the grassroots level.
After a tour through western and central Japan in autumn and winter 2023/24, the Misemono-Yatai will move to Berlin and will be shown in Germany for the first time in the summer of 2024, together with the exhibition developed by Japanese and international artists during its journey.

「ミセモノ屋台」は、ベルリンのアーティスト、タチアナ・プロイスが2012年に東京に設立した現代アートのための移動式展示スペースです。 アーティストが運営する非商業的なスペースであり、商業的な配慮や伝統的なギャラリーのルールから解き放たれた、芸術的な自己組織化、集団的で参加型の芸術創造のための場です。 移動可能なプラットフォームである屋台は、地域のアート機関と連携して屋内で展示することも、公共スペースで屋外展示することも可能で、普段は現代アートに接することのない地域社会を巻き込むことができます。 このプロジェクトの目的は、文化的・社会経済的に異なる背景を持つ人々との対話を始め、芸術機関の貴重な活動をより多くの人々に知ってもらうこと、そしてもちろん、日本とドイツのアートシーンの草の根レベルでの交流を促進することです。
2023年の秋と2024年の冬、北九州と新潟を訪れした後、「ミセモノ屋台」はベルリンへ引っ越しして、2024年夏に、旅行中に国内外のアーティストによって展開される作品とともに、初めてドイツで展示される予定です。

ÜBER DEN PROJEKTRAUM
Der Misemono-Yatai ist ein mobiler Ausstellungsort für zeitgenössische Kunst im öffentlichen Raum, der 2012 in Tokio von der Berliner Künstlerin Tatjana Preuss gegründet wurde. Der Projektraum bietet eine Plattform für künstlerische Selbstorganisation sowie kollektive und partizipative Schaffensprozesse – abseits von ökonomischen Zwängen und Ausstellungskonventionen. Wie der aus den Wörtern Misemono (Kuriosa) und Yatai (Bude) zusammengesetzte Titel andeutet, ist der Projektraum sowohl den traditionellen Verkaufsständen japanischer Straßenhändler als auch dem Mobiliar europäischer Wunderkammern oder früher wissenschaftlicher Sammlungen nachempfunden. Als mobile Plattform kann der Yatai sowohl in lokalen Kunstinstitutionen als auch unter freiem Himmel im öffentlichen Raum ausgestellt werden und so Communities ansprechen, die normalerweise nicht mit zeitgenössischer Kunst in Berührung kommen. Ziel des Projekts ist es, Menschen unterschiedlicher kultureller und sozialer Herkunft miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen, Kunstinstitutionen zum Stadtraum hin zu öffnen und natürlich den Austausch zwischen der japanischen und deutschen Kunstszene zu fördern.
Nach einer Tour durch West- und Zentraljapan im Herbst und Winter 2023/24 zieht der Yatai nach Berlin um und ist im Sommer 2024 erstmals in Deutschland zu sehen, zusammen mit der auf seiner Reise von japanischen und internationalen Künstler*innen entwickelten Ausstellung.
